Just got a letter from my manager. Be aware of scams in our neighborhood!
“Magazine Fundraising Kid Scam
Just wanted to give you a heads up that myself, Michael, and our neighbors in #… all donated to this kid named Juan Yavat who was going door-to-door to raise money for his trip to Europe in February of this year. Luckily, Josh just came home as the kid was leaving our apartment.
After receiving unsolicited magazines and trying to unsubscribe, I found out that it was a scam. This comes to great disappointment since the kid was very convincing and I was told my donation would be providing books to a hospital. Though we may be naive and the sales pitch pretty ironic, it is an unfortunate shame that this happens because it makes anyone who is affected by scams like these feel less neighborly, and far less sympathetic for door-to-door sales people (especially kids) who ask people to donate to their causes.
I think it is important to inform all tenants to never donate to any people who go door-to-door. In particular, the organization that I have my receipt from is ‘Explorer Communications’ – which has an F grade from the Better Business Bureau. So if they ever return, however they get into the gate, Explorer Communications is a brand that should be considered as scam and I hope awareness helps future tenants from donating to 14 year olds coming to their door and asking to fund their trip to Europe with authentic-seeming magazine sales documents…”
